Leah will explain what SSVF covers for low-income, homeless Veterans and Veterans in danger of becoming homeless and how to access those services.

Landlords are crucial to the success of housing Veterans in need. They continually look for partners in their efforts. There are currently discussions on the Federal level to address how they can expand support of landlords.

Following are some key points Leah will be explaining:

At this time they can guarantee rent and utility payments for short-term assistance, while assisting the Veteran family access increased income or other, longer-term/permanent assistance. For extraordinary circumstances, they may be able to pay a double-deposit upon signing of a lease. Case managers can assist and be present if an issue with the tenant arises. Other costs may be covered, such as background checks and application fees.

Another way they can support landlords is to help keep their units full. They can refer and assist a Veteran to be placed in a vacancy. If you have a Veteran family tenant and they are behind on rent (and meet the eligibility factors for the program), SSVF can pay arrearages, support on-going temporary financial assistance, and work with the family to become stable. This eliminates the need for a formal court ordered eviction and keeps the unit occupied.

Other housing assistance program partners, their contact information and how they can support WV landlords will also be shared.
